How to Stretch For Push-ups

How to Stretch Before and After Push-ups

How to stretch when doing push-ups. Stretch before push-ups? Does anybody even do that? Yes, actually yes they do. As I said in Importance of Stretching, stretching prevents injury and increases flexibility. When it comes to push-ups, so long as you’re not going on a Mission:Impossible trying to bust out 100 handstand push-ups your first week in, injury isn’t much of a worry, but since you’re interested in bodyweight exercises, you probably like the idea of flexibility, so taking the time to stretch shouldn’t be too much of a bother for you.

Push-ups mainly work three main muscle groups. The Tricepsthe Deltoid, and the Pectoralis Minor (look below or click on them for their corresponding wiki pages if you aren’t sure what they are).

So naturally, those are the muscles that we want to try and stretch. I found a great little video that goes over  how to stretch when doing push-ups. It’s only about 4 minutes long so it won’t take long.

She does a great job at explaining how to stretch the muscles to you, so I don’t think I need to do a re-cap of what she says (if you think I should do a recap, let me know in the comments below).

It is important to remember to take your time while stretching, don’t rush through it, enjoy it, relax. Your pre-workout stretches should be your “game face” time. Clear your head, focus on nothing but the feeling of the burn. Ignore all the crap you have going on in your life, because right now, it doesn’t matter. Remember to breathe deep and slowly while stretching to get oxygen in your blood, which will then be transported to your muscles and will cause them to perform better during your workout.

Your post-workout stretch (my personal favorite) is where you get to relax and enjoy all the fun chemicals your body released into your blood during the workout. You may not feel them while you’re getting started because your body will be stressed from the recent change, but it will adapt, don’t worry, soon you’ll be able to enjoy these chemicals too. This is where you get to just chill out, feel great, and get to spend a few more minutes before returning to the stresses in your life. You’ll begin to look forward to this time of the day when you make a habit out of this. Just remember to relax and leave your worries at the door before getting started. Hopefully now you know how to stretch the muscles used when doing push-ups.
