Introduction to Diet and Nutrition
Diet and nutrition are a key component to reaching your fitness goals, whatever they may be. Before we go any further, let’s get one thing clear. A “diet” does NOT mean you are going on Atkins or Jenny Craig or whatnot. You are on a diet right now, if you are eating food, you are on a diet. Your diet is simply what you are putting into your body. You are a machine, you utilize energy from what you consume. A diet is to a person as gasoline is to your car, get that straight. Many people seem to be afraid of the word “diet”, almost like it’s shameful. What I think is shameful is not doing anything about your situation. If you are overweight right now and you want to get fit, it’s shameful to not do anything about it. If you are overweight and are happy with it, good for you! The shame is not in being overweight, the shame is when you don’t want to be overweight and aren’t taking action.
Now that we have those stigmas out of the way, let’s get down to business. If your fitness goals are to gain muscle mass, there is a solid chance you are going to need to change your diet to consume more healthy calories. If your fitness goals are to lose unnecessary fat, you may not need to consume less calories, you just need stop eating junk, start eating healthy foods, and get physical.
As I said above, you are a machine, so you need to take care of yourself. McDonald’s five times a week is not taking care of yourself. You need to be putting in clean wholesome nutrients. Let’s think about this for a minute, if you’ve ever tried to grow any fruits or vegetables, you’ll know that you need to make sure the plant is getting the right amount of nutrients. Too much and they won’t grow, and if they do, they will grow bad and the yield won’t be what you had desired. In a car, once or twice in your life you might have filled up and the pump and the car just ran horribly after. While this could be caused by a number of things, in a recent experience of mine, I filled up and there was too much water in the gas. Naturally the water sank to the bottom of the tank and limited the amount of actual gasoline that could get into the engine. My car was running horribly! It accelerated slowly, the engine was screaming in pain, and I wasn’t able to get past 40 MPH (I was on my way back from a road trip at the time, needless to say, it doubled the time it took to get home). This happened because the car wasn’t getting the right amount of what it needed. You are no different, you need to be putting in the right amounts of the right things to “run” the way you are supposed to.
All this means is that, you can’t be putting greasy foods and highly refined complex carbohydrates into your body, it isn’t what your body was designed to run on. Instead of eating Bonbon’s and Cherrio’s, snack on some Nori Seaweed or an Apple. Instead of eating a burger at McDonald’s, cook yourself a nice marinated chicken breast. If you don’t have the time, make the time, if there is a will there is a way. You don’t need to eat things you don’t like, if you do, you probably won’t succeed. All it takes is commitment to yourself, wake up earlier and cook all your meals for the day, or cook your meals for the next day at night.
